Magdalena Slaboňová

Is an emerging Slovak artist, currently living in London, whose practice is based on a transdisciplinary approach.
The range of her practical skills is quite broad – it wanders from directing through stage lighting and set design to sound and AV. However, the range of her interests is, as she describes, even broader.
In her practice, she is interested in exploring new ways how to merge different art-fields together creating something innovative and expressive.
The conjunction “creating something“ is quite distinctive for her practice since she does not want to define what she is doing until the very last stage of the process. She believes that the outcome always reveals itself during the creative process which is built on experimentation and spontaneous responses.
At the same time, she likes when the final form of her work cannot be classified, and people are actually questioning what they are witnessing – is it an installation? an exhibition? a performance? an event? She thinks of herself as an art-blender. She enjoys blurring the boundaries between different fields, disciplines, practices, forms or even different creative roles.
In her works, she often plays with contrasts, sudden changes of mood, a spontaneous flow of actions and responses, and also with a clash of realities. She finds it interesting to combine digital, virtual and live elements together in order to build a new kind of mixed reality. Her desire is to expand the realm of perception.
She gained her practical skill set mainly during her studies at Middlesex University (London, UK), where she graduated with a bachelor´s degree in Theatre Arts (Theatre Directing), then during her work placement in Truc Spherique cultural centre (Zilina, Slovakia), and during various collaborations. The most influential collaborations for her were, for example, with the Slovak choreographer and dancer Zuzana Burianova, and with the young directors Munotida Chinyanga and Simone Giustinelli.
Throughout her current MA studies, she has been investigating the creative potential of technology (more specifically - projection) and its interactivity in live performances. The areas of her investigation are including Digital Art, Video-mapping and Reactive Projection.
